ITALIANISSIMO !!

After some requests, I decided to post my Italy slideshow here for you to view. This was one of the videos shown in my WPPI workshop last week as I had explained how important it is to get out there and shoot for yourself also, without any pressure or limitations. Whether it be travel, or photographing for a non-profit organization, I believe fully that it refreshes our spirit!

So the story behind this video…..back in April of 2009 I decided at the last minute to hop on a plane and document Italy. I had the itch. It had been over 10 years since I last had photographed Italy, and that was entirely on film! I travelled Italy from top to bottom in just 9 days, so I did not stay in one location for too long. When I returned to Toronto, I immediately dove into my busy wedding season, and so my Italy images hibernated on my computer for almost a year! I was not even able to look at them! One month before WPPI Vegas, I decided to show some of my personal work in my class, and so, I sat down and really viewed them all for the first time. This is what I put together. (Note: this slideshow is composed entirely of still images, no video).

Grab a cappuccino, or a caffe latte, sit back………and enjoy!

May 26, 2010 - 4:40 pm sandra medeiros - i love this video. Took me right back to Italy:) What program did you use to do this - specifically the stop animation parts of it? i have pictures of my daughter crawling that i would love to do 'animate' too...but not sure how to go about it.

April 9, 2010 - 12:47 pm Ingrid - Silvana....truly spectacular!! I feel as though I have now been there!! Couldn't possible choose a favourite image...however I just adore the series of the man walking around the corner, and I just LOVE how you captured the argument between lovers...not always a piece of cake!!! So inspiring. Thank you for sharing this - a real blessing that God has given you this incredible talent.

WPPI 2010 VEGAS!!

I am back from Vegas!  This year was especially memorable for me as I taught a Master class to some wonderful photographers from around the globe!  I must say, boy was I nervous, but I went in solely trusting that God had my back, and He did not fail me!  After my class, I had the opportunity to speak to my new friends, and was pleasantly surprised to hear many of them opening up to me and sharing very personal experiences, some related to photography, and some not.  This is what it’s all about!  It made it all worthwhile.  All my nervousness and fear of the unknown went away after having such amazing conversations.  I can’t begin to tell you how amazing God is.  I believe that He sets up divine appointments.   Thank you to my amazing God and my fellow photographer friends!!!

I travelled light on this trip and took only 2 lenses with me.  This was the view from my room at the Signature Suites MGM.

Mr. ‘Incredible Photographer”, Anthony Cava, shared my flight.   Here he is preteding to be all shy……but he really is not.

About to touch down on Vegas ground!!!   Getting excited!

Okay, this was just too weird to see.  My name on a board outside the speaking rooms at the MGM………..little ol’ me…….who would have thunk it???????

I did not enter any prints into competition this year as I had other projects on the go, maybe next year…..we’ll see :)

I met my new homeless friend, Mike (aka “Sticks”) out on the Vegas strip the very 1st day I got there.  He says his friends nicknamed him “Sticks” because he is always breaking something.

It was a far way down from the 32nd floor

I was so happy to have a full kitchen in my suite!  I bused it to Whole Foods and picked up my produce for the week so that I can eat healthy.  Look at the avocados….Mmmmm….ripe and delicious!!

0013

Me again……

0014

It’s funny how something always happens to me when I go down to Vegas.  Last year as I was returning to Toronto, I had to be taken off the plane in a stretcher and rushed to emergency (if you missed it, you can read all about the ordeal here)……this year I had to leave Vegas 3 days earlier because my eyes were shutting down on me due to the really bad dry, smokey air in the hotel.  They were burning so much I just couldn’t keep them open anymore.  A day after I gave my presentation, I changed my flight and caught the “red eye” back to Toronto (no pun intended).

Nonetheless, I enjoyed my stay, meeting awesome people, and hanging out with my Toronto photog friend Judy.   I’m happy to be back home and am thankful for such an awesome experience!  I will never forgot it.

Special thank you to all of my sponsors: Vision Art Books, Forbeyon Albums, GTA Photo Lab and Modern Album Designs.   I love these people!  Anyone who knows me knows that I am a very particular when it comes to quality and service and  prefer to only deal with the best.  This is why I have chosen to gladly give my business to these vendors.

Also, Modern Album Designs have offered a 20% discount to all first time pro photographers  for trying out their services.  All you would need to do is provide the code:  WPPIimpulse.

Vision Art Books was kind enough to print a beautiful 60 page - 8 x 6 Coffee Table Book for all of  the attendees who were in my class!!  The book is a compilation of my most recent engagement & wedding images.

18

20

21

They also gave away these adorable little cookies from “Veronica’s Treats“.   The cookies were printed with a Vision Art photo on top and wrapped in cellophane.  They were too cute to eat!  So I took mine home with me to save and admire.  Well, my 3 little kitties were quite taken back by them also and decided that they would be a whole lot better sitting in their tummies.   This is all that was left…..*sigh*

Note: If anyone has a photo of the original packaged version, please send it to me so that I can show what it is really supposed to look like.

17

Update: I’ve got the photo!  Jesse & Matt from Finest Moments sent me the cookie photo below!!  (Two great guys with amazing hearts & photo skills) …..you guys are awesome!

June 9, 2010 - 7:44 pm Priscilla - Hiya!!! just passing through... your photos, stories and adventures just keep getting better =) Just letting you know we've moved back from Moose Factory and into the town of Cobourg, ON (beautiful beach/places to shoot btw) Hope all is well! I can't help notice that beautiful star necklace you have on in the photos (where did you get it??? i LOVE it!)

March 19, 2010 - 7:38 pm Muriel Lily - Silvana my eyes were red & hurt the whole time i was in vegas too! Btw, I loved the italian slideshow!!

March 16, 2010 - 12:07 pm Manuella Pararas-Hulbert - Oh Silvana, you make me so wish I came to WPPI, its the 3rd year in a row that I had to miss it. I'm definitely not booking any weddings during WPPI next year and am going to go for sure. Love all your images and so nice to see pics of you, you're lovely. Glad the class went well, I knew it would.

March 16, 2010 - 9:26 am Mark - Congrats on having a class at WPPI, Silvana. :) When I saw your name on the schedule I really wanted to get down to hear you speak, but I wasn't able to make Vegas this year. Probably just as well, since I'm allergic to tobacco!

March 15, 2010 - 4:19 pm Julie B - Silvanna, I was so moved by your class at WPPI. Your love for your work, couples and God is incredible. I can not even put into words how much your talk meant to me. I want that deep connection with the couples, that love for them and their beautiful story. You reminded me of how important that is. Your vision for your work is amazing. I love how you could take a simple looking hotel and turn it into something beautiful. Thank you for sharing your heart. I believe God lead me to your class because it was exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you Thank you! Also, I ended up with food poisoning this year. I'm so sorry to hear you had it last year. I ended up sick for a whole day! I do hope your eyes are feeling better now that you are home. Thank you again for everything, Julie

March 14, 2010 - 7:13 am Julie Mckee - So glad to hear everything went well for you in Vegas Silvana - I knew it would! Your images are stunning as usual, they make me want to go even more next year! Sorry to hear you had to leave early...

March 13, 2010 - 11:36 pm paul anagnou - Well Silvana,it was my first time at wppi and I met a lot of photographers, great photographers, but,if I may,you were outstanding as a person. That really stroke me and I strongly believe that you were by far the best.(kind of sure that I'll be meeting you again in the future).

March 12, 2010 - 11:09 am Lisa Marie - Third time's the charm? :) Happy to see you in front of the camera for a change. Love, love, love these images, especially the second last. You look amazing in that shot. Welcome back. Ciao....

March 12, 2010 - 8:51 am Jonathan Foster - Silvana, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your class, I wasn't able to come tell you that in person because I had to run to my next appointment. You were actually my first Master Class to ever take! I think the extra time you took to share your testimony was extraordinary. I love it when we can be bold.

March 11, 2010 - 4:26 pm Silvana Frammartino - Thanks so much guys! Randy - I mostly shot with my Nikon 45mm TS...love that lens!

March 11, 2010 - 11:20 am Randy - Such beautiful images and a fresh perspective! I've spent so much time in Vegas that it's hard to me to approach and see it this way, but I really enjoyed all your images. So sorry to hear about your sensitivity to the smoke. It's something that really bothers me as well and I'm always glad to leave the 'jing-jing-jing' of the slot machines and the smoke. I hate to be 'that guy', but I have to ask in the hopes that you'll share. What lens did you use for this series? At first I thought it might be a tilt-shift, but then I later thought it might actually be a lensbaby!

March 11, 2010 - 5:39 am Dave & Charlotte - So great to hear the plus class went well for you :) welcome home... We both wish you a speedy recovery. We'll catch up soon.

March 10, 2010 - 9:45 pm Tova - Beautiful photos.

Our Homeless Drive…….a Success!!

I am so glad to report that our Homeless Drive last weekend went over very well!   A group of us got together to prepare meal bags and then deliver them directly to the homeless on the streets of Toronto to those in need.  We were all super-charged!  We met so many beautiful people and had great conversations.  It always amazes me how greatful and polite they all are.  Well, there’s lots to share……..so read on!!   :) 3

5

We all met up in the morning to prepare the meal bags which included a sandwich, juice/water, fresh fruit, granola bars and some sweets. In the end, we had over 70 bags!! We even gave out some toiletries, hats, canned goods, towels and shirts that were donated. We were not sure if we would even find 70 people to give them to, but we ended up handing them all out! At one point we got swarmed in the park! People would be running up to us! They were all very patient, just waiting for their baggies. In the end, we ran out and had to turn a few away……my heart broke :(

Here is Mariam wrapping the sandwiches……..with love.

Here’s Dave. Now before the judgement comes, you need to remember that, as we know, alot of people on the streets are addicted to drugs, and for some it’s their only means of coping. It’s sad……but I was amazed that Dave was being honest. As I was talking to him, I remember him mentioning that he loves his dogs much more than people, and that they mean so much to him. It’s the only unconditional love he gets.

And here’s Stephen. What an incredible man. He is 74 years old, of Greek heritage and has been rejected by his family. Lina & Ramez were so drawn to this man…….they were talking to him for hours! He was very open in sharing his life story and really enjoyed the fact that someone was listening. The next day, Lina called me and told me that she want’s to go downtown to see him again. He usually sits on the same bench daily, so she got the idea of inviting him to her home in Brampton so that he can shower and clean-up, and then sit down and enjoy a nice hot meal. (The 50 course Italian feast that she usually makes!) I’ll keep you posted on the outcome :) 1619

18

And here is me and Tyler. He is a very interesting man whose been through alot. He has a long criminal record and has been in and out of jail. He admits that he did some crazy stuff which resulted in him getting kicked out of his parents home. Things got worse on the street, and he became addicted to drugs. He is now on Methadone to help him with his addictions and is really trying to turn his life around. He says that after encountering God, he no longer lives for himself and has really changed, but it’s a daily struggle. He told me that he’s famous! He mentioned pulling a stunt and jumping into the rapids of Niagara Falls, just before getting arrested. I said: “Tyler, you’re playing with me aren’t you?” He said “No, really, I did it!” Google me. Well, the next day I did, and sure enough, he was telling the truth. He was in the news and everything. The last person to try this stunt died back in 1886. I believed he lived for a reason. You can read the story here. (credit to Roshel for taking this photo) :)

This was the cutest thing ever! Around Queen & Church St., a firetruck was stopped at a red light. The driver noticed an elderly woman slowly walking across the street, got out of his truck, and assisted the woman walking her all the way across. How sweet!!!!!!!! Way to go Mr. Fireman!!

July 3, 2009 - 10:28 am Lisa Marie - Silvana, I just had to tell you that your latest blog touched my heartstrings like you can't imagine… In case you haven't noticed I'm incredibly passionate and emotional. Your shots brought out the realism of their everyday situation and as if the first few pictures didn't show that... the notes you added in the sandwiches did. I hope they felt the warmth you and your volunteers exuded. I can imagine what that meant to them. Truthfully, I hope Mauro and I can be part of the action the next time around. We need more compassionate people like you around. Thank you on their behalf….. God Bless!

Help the Homeless - “Out on the Streets Mission”

22

So, this is the time where many of us plan for our summer vacations and weekend trips up North to the cottage.   But some people are thinking about where their next meal is going to come from, or even if they will make it through the summer.  So, I was sitting around one day thinking about this….and thinking about how we can make a difference.  And this is what came to mind:

We will be hitting the streets of Toronto on Saturday, June 27th to deliver food, clothing, etc. directly to the homeless.

We will meet up at a specified location to prepare all the meals and organize our group. We will then drive to the streets of downtown Toronto to deliver directly to those in need.

Mini vans are always welcome so that we can gather more people & goods into one vehicle.  Donations for the following are also welcome:

  • Shoes (new)
  • Socks (new)
  • Hats (new)
  • T-Shirts (new)
  • Underwear (new)
  • Hygiene items (soap, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes/toothpaste)
  • Gift Cards to food stores (great idea!)
  • Bottled water
  • Juice boxes
  • Non-perishable foods (pop-top soups, crackers, peanut butter and jelly)
  • Granola bars/healthy snacks
  • Canned fruits & vegetables

Whether you have goods to offer, or just your time to help prepare and deliver, we would love to have you join us!  Every lit bit helps.

If you would like to sign up, please e-mail me at:  impulsephoto@bellnet.ca to let me know.  You will be put on “the list” and I will notify you with more information as to where we will all be meeting.

THIS IS OPEN TO ANYONE!…….CLIENTS……PHOTOGRAPHERS……FRIENDS……BLOG STALKERS……LET’S ALL COME TOGETHER!!

This is the kind of thing that gets me excited….I am so looking forward to this!

Thank-you!……..and may God Bless you for helping out  :)

Some random pics……….

Lately I’ve been putting in alot of hours behind my computer, and so when I work, my kitties love hanging around and just being with mommy. They are the best at just being “cute”, so mommy tends to grab her camera alot and start shooting. Here are some random shots of the kids……..

And now I can finally introduce you all to my new Creative Director of Design, Nicole. She is undertaking alot of my studio design tasks and is superb at what she does. We are finally tackling my marketing/branding ideas which I have had for quite a while. I told her I needed a headshot of her for the blog, and so I dragged her out into the freezing cold -25 degree weather a little while back and took this shot. She’s a real sweetie!

I shot this next photo a couple of days ago. I was driving around the rougher part of town, and as I was stopped at a traffic light, I glanced over to the right and saw this image. As I stared, I felt a lump swell up in my throat.

April 29, 2009 - 12:49 pm Natasha Onorati - Hi Silvana, I happened to be checking out your blog and remembered these images. Jennifer is one of my friends and a girl I went to school with and I mentioned to her that I saw these pictures. I hope that's alright! You're such a great person Silvana!

April 21, 2009 - 3:30 pm Silvana - Jennifer...I am truly sorry about your best friend. I can definately send you these images. One question...how did you ever find this post?? I think it's amazing how God works. And right around her anniversary of all days. I'd love to hear more about Bianca. *HUGS* Silvana ~

April 21, 2009 - 8:35 am JENNIFER RUTLEDGE - Hello- I would just like to say the photos you took at keele & finch of the ghost bike, that was my best friend Bianca Gogel. Her 3 year death anniversary was yesterday (4.20) I was very touched to see these pics and was wondering if you would possibly be able to email them to me so I can post them in the RIP Group for her? I understand they are copyrighted and will respect that. I can even put ur copyright under the photos. Please get back to me! Thanks!

It’s that time of year again…..!

Yup!  I packed my bags and caught a last minute flight out to Dominican to visit my daddy.  He’s been living there for 11 years now, and he’s always expecting me to go down at least once a year.  He usually tries to convince me to stay with him a couple of months, and I always feel so bad explaining to him that I cannot leave my studio for that long.  Well, we still had a fun time even though it was only for a week.  Here are some of this year’s pics……hope you like them!!   :o)221

14469112This poor little guy didn’t even stand a chance     :o(3510Soooooooooo cute!!  I wanted to put them all in my pocket and take them home!   Check out the 2 brothers on the left doing the butt-to-butt dance  :o)8207231315181My daddy…….always smiling at me161917112422

This was so cute. I bought a DVD Player for my dad so that he can watch some personal family videos that I made, and also his favorite wildlife documentaries. Now, my dad barely knows how to operate a television, let alone a computer, so I gave him a brief tutorial on how to operate a DVD Player before I left. (I shot these short video clips with my little point-and-shoot)

This little guy followed me home while I was on my walk. He was so affectionate and walked with me quite a distance….all the way home! He would not leave my side. I could tell that he really wanted some lov’in, so I played with him for quite a while. Even when I went inside, he stayed outside the door waiting for me and wouldn’t leave! I wish I could rescue all the little kitties & doggies in DR. Lots of them are in really bad shape :o(

April 1, 2009 - 3:42 pm Nawshaba - You capture life's most precious moments.. everything becomes beautiful through your lens...Not a lot of people see beauty in the way that God has blessed you to see it. I wish I knew how to photograph the way you do!

March 11, 2009 - 1:38 pm Manuella - Oh Silvana, your images always move me, wether its images from a wedding or shots from your trip visiting your dad. Love your work, you are always an inspiration and even though you don't know it, you've taught me alot in the past couple of years since starting my photography business. Thank you and God bless. P.S. Your father has such a sweet smile.

March 10, 2009 - 4:27 pm Gillian@gigiphotogra - Beautiful images. You have a great eye. I am traveling to the DR for a photography project in May. I have never been there but I'm sure it will life changing. Does your dad just live there or work there?

March 6, 2009 - 7:26 pm Claudia Hung - OMGgg doggie :( My heart always breaks when I go to less developed places in the world and see so many stray dogs/cats roaming around :( I too wish I could take them all home... *sniff* c.

March 4, 2009 - 9:45 am Lisa Marie - That photo of your father is incredible. His smile is so incredible genuine..... I know how much fun it can be to meet up with family and how heartbreaking it can be to leave. At least you have great images to keep you company until you meet up again. Amazing work.... LM

March 3, 2009 - 10:27 am Mark Kostel - Hi Silvana, I love the imagery in your post. Its always so fresh and inspiring to see different cultures & lifestyles. Cheers, Mark
